Nonextensive statistical mechanics for rotating quasi-two-dimensional turbulence

چکیده
We have conducted experiments on an asymmetrically forced quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flow in a rapidly rotating annulus. Assuming conservation of potential enstrophy and energy, we maximize a nonextensive entropy function to obtain the azimuthally averaged vorticity as a function of radial position. The predicted vorticity profile is in good accord with the observations. A nonextensive formalism is appropriate because long-range correlations between small-scale vortices give rise to large coherent structures in the turbulence. We also derive probability distribution functions for the vorticity from both extensive and nonextensive entropies, and we find that the prediction from nonextensive theory is in better accord with experiment, especially in the tails of the distribution function. The nonextensive parameter q has the value 1.9 ± 0.2. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonextensivity in turbulence in rotating two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows
Our experiments on turbulent flow in a rotating annulus yield probability distribution functions (PDFs) for velocity increments δv( ), where is the separation between points. We fit these PDFs to a form derived for turbulent flows by Beck, who used the Tsallis nonextensive statistical mechanics formalism. For slow rotation rates, we find that the fit parameter q is 1.25 for small . At large , q...

The Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics and the standard thermodynamics are very useful in the discussion of extensive systems. However, they are not good to study situations where nonextensive e ects occur, for instance, systems involving long-range interactions (e. g., d = 3 gravitation)[1, 2], long-range microscopic memory[3], and systems with a relevant (multi)fractal-like structure. On t...

The statistical properties of fully developed hydrodynamic turbulence can be successfully described using methods from nonextensive statistical mechanics. The predicted probability densities and scaling exponents precisely coincide with what is measured in various turbulence experiments. As a dynamical basis for nonextensive behaviour we consider nonlinear Langevin equations with fluctuating fr...
متن کاملMaximum entropy theory and the rapid relaxation of three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic turbulence.
Turbulent flow in a rapidly rotating stably stratified fluid (quasi-geostrophic turbulence) commonly decays toward a stable pattern of large-scale jets or vortices. A formula for the most probable three-dimensional end state, the maximum entropy state (MES), is derived using a form of Lynden-Bell statistical mechanics. The MES is determined by a set of integral invariants, including energy, as ...
